Northbound Interstate 35W was closed at 28th Street for several hours on Thursday morning after an accident that killed one man and left another in critical condition, officials said.

Officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of I-35W around 9:15 a.m. regarding a major accident, police said. A man ran out of gas on I-35W and stopped on the median shoulder while he waited for a friend to bring some more.

The friend arrived with the gasoline and both men were outside of their vehicles, police said. A car trying to avoid hitting a semi-truck from behind pulled into the median shoulder and hit both men.

One of the victims died at the scene and the other was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man who died as Sonny Johnson, 47, of Grand Prairie.

The Traffic Investigations Unit is investigating the accident and will determine if any charges are filed, police said.

The interstate reopened just before 1 p.m., according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
