Interstate 35 is one of the busiest roadways in Texas, which means it needs constant repair — and new construction projects crop up each year.

From weather to typical wear and tear, I-35 needs constant work from Gainseville to Laredo. Whether its paving, barrier repair or striping, Texans know they could possibly face a delay every time they travel on the interstate.

Here’s what to know about construction projects on I-35 and when they will be completed, according to the Texas Department of Transportation:

GAINESVILLE

  • Estimated completion date: May 1, 2025

I-35 from Gainesville to Valley View is under construction for the next two years. Drivers should expect delays on both the north and southbound lanes.

FORT WORTH

  • Estimated completion date: Sept. 29

A significant part of I-35W from Eagles Parkway in north Fort Worth to Alliance and North Tarrant Parkway is under construction until later this year. Drivers should expect delays and multiple closures of the north and southbound lanes.

ALVARADO

  • Estimated completion date: Dec. 31

Just north of Alvarado from County Road 604 to Highway 67 on I-35W, drivers can expect delays and alternating lane closures for road repair.

AUSTIN

  • Estimated completion date: June 16

Starting on June 11 and wrapping up five days later, alternating lanes of north bound I-35 will be closed for paving near Wells Branch. Lane closures will from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

SAN ANTONIO

  • Estimated completion date: June 9

Multiple lane closures on northbound main lanes will be closed just north of San Antonio by Live Oak. Striping, barrier and pavement work will be done.

LYTLE

  • Estimated completion date: Sept. 29

A section of I-35 near Lytle will have multiple lanes reduced to a single lane as construction is being done on Frontage Road. Main lanes will not be affected. Only portions between FM 3175 and FM 2790 will see single lane traffic.

COTULLA

  • Estimated completion date: Jan. 29, 2024

Near the small town of Cotulla, a section of I-35 is under construction. Expect highway to be reduced to a single lane.

SOUTH TEXAS
