Want to avoid a traffic jam? Avoid this freeway near DFW Airport – all weekend

Motorists planning to drive anywhere near the north end of DFW Airport should be prepared for delays this weekend.

Both directions of Texas 121 are scheduled to be closed near Grapevine Mills mall. The closures are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Friday and continue through 6 a.m. Monday.

Northbound Texas 26 also will be closed near Grapevine Mills.

The closures are needed to make way for the demolition of the old Farm Road 2499 bridge, according to NorthGate Constructors, the main contractor. The work is part of a $371 million renovation of the Interstate 635/Texas 121 interchange.

More than 200,000 vehicles per day pass through Grapevine on a convergence of highways, including Texas 121, Texas 114, LBJ Freeway, Texas 26 FM 2499 and FM 1709.

For those who must travel through the area this weekend, here are the detours:

  • Northbound Texas 121 traffic will be detoured to the frontage road at Bass Pro Drive.
  • Southbound 121 traffic will be detoured at Stars & Stripes Way.
  • Northbound Texas 26 traffic will detour to Bass Pro Drive, the 121 frontage road and Sandy Lake Road.
