Budweiser Clydesdales return to State Fair of Texas

The Budweiser Clydesdales are galloping back to Fair Park.

The horses will return to the State Fair of Texas after last appearing in 2005. A special exhibit will be open all 24 days of the fair and let guests get up close and personal. Staff members will be on hand to answer any questions ranging from the animals’ daily life to the type of care they require.

“The Budweiser Clydesdales were always a huge attraction at the Fair and we are so excited to welcome them back as one of our featured exhibits this year,” State Fair President Mitchell Glieber said in a press release. “... Getting to see the Budweiser Clydesdales in person is not something you experience every day, and this is definitely an experience you can share with the whole family.”

The Budweiser Clydesdales’ history can be traced back to 1933 when August A. Busch, Jr. and Adolphus Busch III gave their father, August A. Busch, Sr., a gift to celebrate the end of Prohibition: a six-horse Clydesdale hitch.

The family, realizing the branding opportunity, then sent a hitch to New York City that drew in thousands of onlookers. The hitch traveled throughout the country and an icon was born.

In 1950, a Dalmatian was added to travel with the horses as their mascot.

The horses have appeared in more than 25 Super Bowl commercials for Budweiser, first appearing in 1986.

With the horses will be Clyde the Dalmatian, the current mascot.

Other attractions at the fair include The Taylor Swift Experience, the Lords of Gravity Basketball Slam Dunk Show and the Lone Star Stampede.

The “Celebrating Texas Agriculture” themed fair will run from Sept. 30 to Oct. 23.
