Of 29 goats attacked in Lubbock barn, only 1 expected to survive

In what was just supposed to be a normal routine for school, a Lubbock student made a bloody discovery Friday.

Late Thursday or early Friday morning, Lubbock Independent School District officials said 29 goats were shot in the district’s barn. Eighteen of them were already dead and 11 were injured.

“I thought I was dreaming. I was in shock,” Monterey High agriculture student Audrey Caporale told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

Ten of the injured goats were being taken to a veterinarian, district spokeswoman Nancy Sharp told the newspaper. However, they aren’t expected to survive.

The only expected survivor, which was grazed by a bullet, will be given a new name: Miracle.

Robert Green, ag manager at the LISD farm, told a reporter from KAMC that several hundred students are enrolled in the program.

"Our vet tech class took care of them, they kidded them out they were birthed,” Green told the station.

Sharp said the official charge for the attack is a state felony and will be Cruelty to Livestock Animals.

"This is really difficult for our students because they've been nursing these along," Sharp told KAMC. "Many of these were orphaned goats ... and so they are animals that our students are very familiar with..."
