Weslaco native Solis drafted by SF Giants
Weslaco native Alex Solis was drafted in the 14th round of the Major League Baseball draft, 418th overall, by the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.
The right-handed pitcher played collegiately at the University of Houston for three seasons after a standout high school career at Weslaco East, where he was named The Monitor's All-Area Player of the Year in 2022.
As a junior at Houston, the right-hander appeared in 23 games for the Cougars, the most by a Cougar. Solis stuck out 37 batters in 37 innings and finished with a 3-2 record.
There is a total of 20 rounds in the MLB Draft with a total of 613 picks.
The San Francisco Giants have several minor league affiliates. In Single-A they have the San Jose Giants, the Eugene Emeralds are their High-A team, the Richmond Flying Squirrels are the Giants' Double-A team and the Sacramento River Cats are the Triple-A team.
The Giants also have various affiliates for rookies.
