Laredo agencies team up for National Pet Fire Safety Class
Pets accidentally start nearly 1,000 home fires each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association, prompting Laredo Animal Care Services and the Laredo Fire Department to host a National Pet Fire Safety Class this week.
The free class will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Laredo Animal Care Services, 5202 Maher Ave.
The session is designed to help pet owners prevent accidental house fires, with firefighters sharing pet-proofing tips, emergency preparedness guidance and practical ways to keep both families and pets safe.
According to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, pets can accidentally start fires by knocking over lit candles, turning on stovetops or damaging electrical decorations such as Christmas lights. The organization also notes that wood-burning stoves and space heaters pose additional risks during the winter months.
Animal Health Associates also warns that pets can spark fires by chewing lithium-ion batteries or charging cords.
The Laredo Fire Department will also discuss what to do if a fire occurs. Sparky the Fire Dog will make a special appearance during the event.
