Man fleeing cop car caught in creek after alleged assault of pregnant woman
A man accused of assaulting a pregnant woman fled from the back of a patrol unit while handcuffed before officers apprehended him in a creek.
Laredo police responded to the 3300 block of Monterrey Avenue at 3:21 p.m. Sunday for a family violence assault call.
The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Frederick Garcia. He was arrested on a charge of assault family violence and secured in the back of a marked patrol unit.
As officers interviewed the victim and witnesses, Garcia opened the patrol unit's door and fled the scene. Officers pursued him on foot and apprehended him in a creek near the intersection of San Francisco Avenue and Frankfort Street.
In addition to the third-degree felony assault charge, Garcia was charged with escape from custody, a Class A misdemeanor, and criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor.
Jail records show Garcia was previously arrested on charges including assault involving impeding the breathing or circulation of a family or household member in 2025, violating a bond or protective order in an assault or stalking case in 2026, misdemeanor marijuana possession in 2024 and 2025, and possession of less than 1 gram of a controlled substance and resisting arrest in April 2026.
