Oribe shampoo recalled over possible bacterial contamination

If you use Oribe shampoo, you may want to check the bottle. Select lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo are being recalled over concerns they may be contaminated with bacteria.

Kao USA announced the voluntary recall July 1 for select lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo in 8.5-ounce and 33.8-ounce bottles, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Why was it recalled?

According to the FDA, the recalled shampoo may be contaminated with Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria.

Health officials said the bacteria pose little medical risk to healthy people, but those with weakened immune systems or certain underlying health conditions may be more susceptible to infection.

Which products were affected?

The recall applies to select lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo in the following sizes:

8.5-ounce bottle (UPC: 840035231242)

Lot code: YR010556

33.8-ounce bottle (UPC: 840035231273)

Lot codes:

YR010576

According to Kao, the affected products were manufactured between Feb. 21 and Feb. 26, 2026. To check whether your shampoo is affected, look for the lot code printed in black on the bottom of the bottle.

Where was the recalled shampoo sold?

The luxury hair care brand is sold through salons and retailers such as Sephora. Kao did not identify where the recalled lots were sold, so consumers should check the lot code on their bottle to determine whether it is affected.

Kao said it is working with the FDA to remove the affected lots from warehouses and is asking salons and retailers to pull the recalled products from shelves and return them for safe disposal.
