Jury selection begins in child sexual assault trial
A former Blessed Sacrament staffer accused of aggravated sexual assault of a child began the trial process Monday with jury selection in the 341st District Court.
In addition to the charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child, a first-degree felony punishable by five to 99 years in prison, Carlos Zamora faces a charge of indecency with a child by sexual conduct, a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison, and improper relationship between educator and student, a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison.
Zamora rejected a plea offer during an April 21 final pretrial hearing before Judge Rebecca Palomo in the 341st District Court.
Senior District Judge Oscar J. Hale presided over a final pretrial hearing in the 341st District Court on June 16, where the defense announced it was ready for trial.
Prosecutors filed supplemental witness and expert witness notices, a notice of intent to seek stacked sentences and applications for witness subpoenas before the scheduled July 6 jury selection, while the defense filed its witness list.
Background
Zamora was a staffer at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School. He was arrested on allegations of having a relationship with a student in a case dating to October 2022, authorities said.
Laredo police identified the suspect as Carlos Zamora. Police and the U.S. Marshals task force served him with warrants in April 2023.
Zamora was charged with indecency with a child by sexual contact and improper relationship between educator and student.
Police said the case came to light in December 2022 when they began the investigation.
LPD said Zamora was not an educator but was employed in a maintenance capacity while also assisting with the sports program.
