Pedigree dog food recall warns of possible metal and plastic after contaminated cans were sold
If you recently bought Pedigree canned dog food, you may want to check the label. Two lots are being recalled after products that were supposed to be destroyed were instead sold and may contain sharp pieces of metal and plastic.
Mars Petcare announced the voluntary recall July 2 for two lots of Pedigree High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor 13.2-ounce wet dog food, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Why was it recalled?
According to the FDA, the recalled product may contain metal and plastic foreign material. Sharp pieces of metal and plastic in the cans could pose a hazard to dogs, with health risks ranging from choking to lacerations or blockages in the gastrointestinal tract.
Mars said it has received no reports of pet illness or injury related to the recall.
Which products were affected?
The recall involves Pedigree High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor 13.2-ounce wet dog food.
Dog owners can identify the recalled product by checking the following lot codes:
-613C3KKCFC
-613C1KKCFC
To find the lot code check the bottom of the can. No other Pedigree or Mars Petcare products are affected.

What should consumers do?
Consumers who purchased the affected product should not feed it to their dogs and should contact Pedigree Consumer Care for a replacement product.
Pet owners who believe their dog consumed the recalled food and are concerned should contact their veterinarian.
