The mayor's revolving door: Explore the turbulent year of staffing in Gina Ortiz Jones' office

Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones has struggled like few, if any, San Antonio mayors before her to hire and retain staffers.

The mayor's office should be the nerve center for policymaking at City Hall - but that hasn't been the case since Jones was sworn in on June 18, 2025.

Jones has cycled through two chiefs of staff, who serve as a mayor's closest adviser and help execute their agenda. It took Jones four months to hire a policy analyst, and she was without a communications director for more than six months.

Eight of her hires have left the office over the course of Jones' first year. Some lasted a couple of months. Others were out in less than a week.

Jones wouldn't comment on what she called "personnel issues" when asked about these departures, but said she expects her staff to work hard.

"It may be a different tempo than some folks are used to, and that's OK," she said.
