LPD: Man charged with forgery after trying to buy tobacco with counterfeit $100 bill

A man was arrested on a forgery charge after attempting to use a counterfeit $100 bill to purchase tobacco products at a convenience store, according to the Laredo Police Department.

Officers responded at about 2 p.m. June 8 to a counterfeit bill report in the 600 block of East Corpus Street.

A convenience store employee reported that a man attempted to purchase tobacco products using a counterfeit $100 bill.

Officers determined the bill was counterfeit because of its texture and the presence of pink Chinese lettering printed on it, police said.

The suspect was identified as 57-year-old Daniel Francisco Tovar, according to police.

Tovar allegedly provided conflicting statements regarding the legitimacy of the bill and told officers he had received it as payment for completing a job.

Jail records show Tovar was booked into Webb County Jail on a charge of forgery of government or national institution money or securities. He remained held as of Friday morning on a $5,000 bond.
