Texas leaders respond after Midland shooting
State leaders have issued statements following the mass shooting in Midland that left one victim dead and injured nine others:
"Cecilia and I are deeply saddened by the senseless act of violence in Midland. We are praying for the victims, their families, and the entire community. I have been briefed on the matter and commend the swift response from the Midland Police Department, DPS and all assisting law enforcement agencies."
- Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on X
"My team and I are continuing to monitor the tragic shooting that occurred in Midland this morning. Extremely grateful for the bravery of local law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to protect our community. Please join me in lifting all of the victims up in prayer."
- Congressman August Pfluger
"I am devastated to hear of the shooting that took place this morning in Midland. This kind of violence has no place in Texas and no place in our country. Thank you to the Midland Police Department and all of our first responders who acted swiftly to protect our neighbors. My prayers are with everyone affected: the victims, their families, our police officers and healthcare workers, and the entire Midland community. Those seeking information about a loved one should visit the Family Unification Center at Midland Memorial Hospital."
- James Talarico, U.S. Senate candidate
"We are devastated and outraged for the victim and survivors of today's mass shooting in Midland, as we await more details. Mass shootings continue to take lives at an appalling rate, even though we know that strong gun laws save lives. More than 4,400 people die from gun violence on average each year in the state. Texans are exhausted by this crisis, and ready to live without the constant fear that a dangerous person with a gun could change their life forever at any moment."
- Emma Brown, Executive Director at GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention group led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
"My heart goes out to the families of the victims in today's tragic shooting in Midland. I am grateful for law enforcement officers and city officials, whose swift action throughout this devastating event undoubtedly saved lives. As we continue to monitor the situation, I am hoping for the fast recovery of those injured."
- Gina Hinojosa, Texas state representative and Democratic nominee for Texas governor
"I love the reaction from the city, I think it's been handled well. My hope for that is that we will look back and compare it to what happened in (2019) and learn the (right) lessons. See what we improved as far as communication, because (with) the after-action reviews, the Senate Committee came to Odessa, and (then-MPD chief) Seth Herman and (then-Midland County Attorney General) Laura Nodolf were talking about the communications problems and different things in the after-action. I would really love to see some sort of follow-up on what we changed, how that helped us and how it worked differently this time. I distinctly hope we learn from our mistakes and we do better. It seems like we did better."
- Cathy Broadrick, Democratic nominee for Texas State House of Representatives, District 82
"Today's shooting in Midland is a heartbreaking tragedy that has deeply affected all of West Texas. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those impacted by this senseless act of violence. In times such as these, the communities of Odessa and Midland stand together. We remain steadfast in our commitment to our neighboring community as it grieves, heals, and moves forward. We are profoundly grateful to the first responders, law enforcement officers, and emergency personnel who answered the call of duty with courage, professionalism, and selfless
dedication. Let us come together in a spirit of unity, compassion, and resolve. May we support those who are suffering, comfort those who are grieving, and work collectively toward a safer and stronger future for all."
- City of Odessa
"Nadine and I are heartbroken by today's tragedy in Midland. Please join us in praying for the victims, their families, and all those affected. We are grateful for the courage and swift response of our law enforcement officers, first responders, and medical personnel. May God watch over our community and those working to keep Midland safe."
- Tom Craddick, Texas State Representative, District 82
