Midland shooting leaves 1 dead, at least 9 injured; shooter also dead
Editor's note: This story has been updated to add the name of the shooter.
A shooting in Midland killed one person and injured at least nine others June 12. The shooter also is dead, officials said.
The shooter was identified as Victor Mata Villarreal. Villarreal was already being sought in a separate case in which he allegedly shot at a Midland police officer on June 10.
The shooting was reported at about 8:15 a.m. in the 4600 block of West Wall Street.
"The situation is now secured in that area, but we are still asking that all Midlanders stay inside. If you are in that area, you don't need to be out and driving around or going to try to see anything," Mayor Lori Blong said. "Officers are containing the situation, and we ask that you respect that perimeter."
Another shooting of this magnitude in the area was the Midland-Odessa shooting, which occurred Aug. 31, 2019. That shooting left seven dead and 25 wounded.
Updates are still being shared about the June 12 shooting, and city officials said community responders are addressing the situation. The Texas Department of Transportation confirmed multiple roads in the area are closed because of law enforcement activity.
"The scene remains active and has not been cleared," city officials said. "Road closures in the area are expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future as the investigation continues."
Motorists are asked to avoid the area and to continue to monitor official City of Midland and Midland Police Department channels for updates.
