UIW student, athlete killed in car crash
A student and cross country runner at the University of the Incarnate Word was killed in a car crash in his Denton County hometown of Sanger on May 28.
Shawn "Sam" Musgrave, 19, had just completed his first semester at UIW in San Antonio, where he was attending on a full cross country scholarship, his obituary said. He was part of the university's men's track and field team, but did not compete with the team in the spring, a UIW spokesman said. Musgrave began attending classes at UIW in January.
Musgrave also was serving in the Texas Army National Guard, according to his obituary.
He was one of two victims killed in the crash, which occurred at 10:25 p.m. May 28 in a rural area on FM 455 in Sanger, Police Chief Tyson Cheek said in a statement.
Musgrave was pronounced dead at the site of the accident at 10:36 p.m., Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office records show.
Another victim of the crash died in a hospital the following morning, the police chief's statement said. Two other victims were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Sanger police have not released any details on how the accident occurred.
"Sam was a 2025 graduate of Sanger High School, where he excelled in cross country, earning numerous medals and titles," his obituary said. "Running was his passion, and even after graduation he continued to support his former teammates and the Sanger Cross Country program.
"He was a selfless young man who always put others first ... He was smart, caring and genuinely friendly, someone who met people easily and made them feel seen."
Visitation services for Musgrave will take place Thursday night in Sanger, followed by a funeral service in that city Friday morning.
Musgrave was remembered during a Mass service at UIW on Tuesday, the school said.
"The University of the Incarnate Word community is stunned and saddened by the sudden loss of Sam Musgrave," the university said in a statement. "Sam was a cherished member of our UIW family and a beloved athlete on our track and field team. Sam had just started his UIW journey and he will be missed by so many.
"In the context of our faith, we entrust Sam into the loving and caring hands of God. Our prayers go out to Sam's family, friends and all who knew him."
