Bexar County could build baseball, soccer fields near Boerne

May 12-Bexar County is moving ahead with plans for a youth sports complex in the far northern part of the county.

The county is studying whether it can build up to eight youth baseball fields, four soccer fields and about 200 parking spaces on 18 acres near the Kendall County line.

The land is part of 145 acres owned by the Alamo Colleges District off Interstate 10 near Boerne, where the district is building a new education facility. Late last summer, Bexar County and the Alamo Colleges District signed an agreement setting in motion plans for the county to turn part of the property into a county park.

If the project moves forward, the county would lease the land from the district, build the sports complex and operate it as part of the county park system. The lease would cost the county $1 and last at least 50 years, according to the memorandum of understanding between the county and Alamo Colleges.

On April 28, commissioners voted to let county staff negotiate with Pape-Dawson Consulting Engineers to study the project's feasibility - an initial step that would eventually allow the county to lease the land from the district.

Alamo Colleges acquired the land in northern Bexar County using bonds that voters approved in 2017. The site will house the Northwest Education and Training Center, a 42,000-square-foot building with classrooms and labs. The project is expected to be completed early next year.

The part of the land where Bexar County plans to build a park is on a floodplain. A park is a more suitable use for a floodplain than classrooms, Precinct 3 Commissioner Grant Moody said at an August Commissioners Court meeting.

Priscilla Camacho, the district's chief legislative officer, told commissioners in November that the sports complex would be in a "prime location" with "huge amounts of growth."
