First responders share tips for a safer summer in Laredo

May 9-With summer approaching, local first responders are sharing safety tips to help Laredo families stay safe while enjoying time outdoors.

As part of the launch of the annual Laredo Sunny Adventures 2026 Summer Guide, mascots Ruff McGruff and Sparky are encouraging parents and children to practice safety throughout the summer break.

Laredo Police Department

For children riding bicycles this summer, the Laredo Police Department advises making sure bikes are in proper condition, following traffic laws and remaining visible to drivers and pedestrians.

Parents are also encouraged to supervise children at all times, stay aware of their surroundings and maintain communication about their children's whereabouts.

The department is also preparing to host two safety-themed events this summer: the inaugural Youth Violence Awareness Event on June 17 at El Eden Recreation Center, 4735 Loma Vista Drive, and the fourth annual Bike Rodeo and Summer Safety Fair on June 26 at Canales Park, 1900 Lafayette St.

Laredo Fire Department

This summer, Sparky is reminding residents to "spread safety this summer" through fire prevention, water safety and other safety practices.

Children are advised not to play with matches, lighters or fireworks and to alert an adult if they find any of those items.

For fire-related emergencies during cookouts or campfires, the department reminds residents to "stop, drop and roll" if clothing catches fire.

At pools, residents are encouraged to follow safety rules, avoid rough play and listen to adults supervising the area.

In the event of an emergency, residents are advised to dial 9-1-1.
