Odessa High School celebrates AVID revalidation

Odessa High School is celebrating its revalidation as an AVID National Demonstration School, a designation achieved by roughly the top 2% of AVID schools in the United States.

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and schools must go through a strict, multi-year validation process to achieve demonstration school status, then require revalidation to maintain it.

The revalidation process looks for high levels of implementation, quality, and fidelity to AVID strategies throughout the school, not only in the AVID elective classes.

This week a revalidation team visited OHS classrooms and attended panels with teachers and students as they examined the school's systems for preparing students for success after high school.

"AVID Center and our guests come to see something real," said OHS AVID Coordinator Naomi Fuentes. "They come to see a school that supports students, pushes them, and believes in them. And that's exactly what we do and who we are. This designation doesn't happen by accident.

In fact, the revalidation process may be more rigorous than earning the designation the first time."

Ector County ISD first implemented AVID as an elective class at middle schools and high schools 19 years ago.

Odessa High first earned National Demonstration School status in 2014. Earning and keeping National Demonstration School status is a distinction that requires sustained effort at every level of the campus. Schools that do not maintain high-fidelity implementation of AVID strategies schoolwide can lose the designation.

The revalidation process evaluates not just whether AVID is present in a school, but whether it has genuinely transformed the school's instruction, leadership, and culture. For Odessa High, revalidating a decade after first earning the designation reflects a long-term institutional commitment, not a one-time achievement.

"After becoming a National Demo School back in 2014, and year after year, we've continued to refine, adjust, and push forward for our students," added Fuentes. "Because that's who we are. Things change.

Challenges show up, sometimes uninvited.

But we don't stay stuck, we level up. That's what being an AVID National Demonstration School is all about."
