Early voting open for municipal elections

Early voting for municipal elections in Cherokee County began Monday and continues through Tuesday, April 28. Election Day is Saturday, May 2.

Elections are currently being conducted in Alto, Jacksonville, New Summerfield and Rusk.

Alto residents will elect three members to the city council. Council members are elected by at-large vote for two-year terms. Incumbents Shamonica Johnson, Carey Palmer and El Thacker are seeking re-election. Keeley Taylor is also running to represent Alto on the city council. Ballots may be cast at Alto City Hall, 404 San Antonio Road.

In Jacksonville, only residents of District 1 will be going to the polls to elect their representative on the city council. Incumbent Letitia Horace faces opposition from Katrina Choice for the next three-year term. Residents may cast their ballots at the Jacksonville Public Library, 526 E. Commerce Street.

The city of New Summerfield is conducting an election for mayor. Michael Fisher is seeking to take Jane Barrow's place in that role. Residents may cast their ballots at New Summerfield City Hall, 13280 State Hwy 110 North.

Residents in a single district in Rusk will be electing their representative for city council. District 5 residents have a choice between incumbent Francis Long or challenger Chucky Pate. Voting is being conducted in the council chambers of Rusk City Hall, 108 E. 5th Street.
