SAWS working to repair water main break near Frost Bank Center
San Antonio Water System crews are working to repair a water main break near the Frost Bank Center - the second time the main has needed repairs in less than a month.
A section of Frost Bank Center Drive, on the east side of the arena, is closed while SAWS fixes a broken 24-inch iron pipe below the road.
Water service to nearby customers has not been affected, the city-owned utility said.
The break is about 500 feet south of another break that occurred in the same pipe on March 27, SAWS spokeswoman Lilliana Gonzalez said.
The pipe was installed in 1952 and failed both times due to its age and shifting clay soils in the ground, the utility said.
Those are ongoing challenges for SAWS, as soil conditions continue to strain its aging water infrastructure. While heavy rain Monday has prompted flash flood warnings and road closures, the years of prolonged drought are the primary culprit for the breaks, as the dry ground causes underground pipes to shift and crack over time.
To fix the current break, SAWS will install 16 feet of new pipe to replace the broken section, Gonzalez said.
The leak was reported at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Gonzalez said, and SAWS employees were on site within 10 minutes. They are working to remove the old, damaged pipe; once that is complete, the road will likely be able to reopen partially for traffic while the new pipe is installed.
Work will continue through the night to ensure it's complete and the road is reopened in time for the Spurs playoff game on Tuesday night at the Frost Bank Center, SAWS said.
