A 13-year-old girl fought off a man who she said tried to kidnap her on her walk to school, Texas police say.

The Central Middle School student was walking from her apartment to school Monday, Oct. 27, when she heard footsteps behind her, according to the Galveston Police Department.

Then, “a man grabbed her from behind,” leading to a struggle between her and the unknown man, police said.

Police said the girl broke free from the man when she bit him twice. She ran to her school, where she told teachers about the encounter.

The 13-year-old did not have any physical injuries, but the victim’s aunt said her niece is mentally shaken following the encounter on her 20-block walk to school, KPRC reported.

After officers and the girl’s parents arrived at the school, they accompanied the teen so she could retrace her steps to determine where the attempted abduction occurred, police said.

Investigators said they obtained security footage from a nearby business that showed the girl walking in the area and a man following her.

The man was wearing a black short-sleeved shirt, blue jeans and is believed to have been wearing a ski mask, according to police.

Police are now searching for the man. Anyone with information is asked to contact Galveston police at 409-765-3777.

“I’m praying we get him off the street soon before another little girl ends up missing!!” the girl’s aunt said on Facebook.

In a statement to KPRC, the Galveston Independent School District said it is “grateful” the student was unharmed.

“We encourage all families to speak with their children about personal safety, including staying alert, walking in groups when possible, and reporting any suspicious behavior immediately to an adult or the police,” the school district said in its statement.
