A big rig crash left a Texas deputy dangling from a bridge, then bystanders jumped into action and pulled him to safety, officials say.

On the morning of Monday, Sept. 8, a pair of deputies stopped on an overpass along Interstate 27 in Lubbock and got out of their vehicle to help a stranded motorist, the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

As they were assisting the driver, a semi-truck slammed into the back of their stopped patrol vehicle, and they were trapped between the vehicle and the guardrail of the overpass, officials said.

The deputies were seriously injured, WOAI reported.

It’s unclear how it happened, but one of the deputies nearly fell off the bridge, video shows. However, “Good Samaritans at a nearby gas station witnessed the event and quickly moved to aid the deputies,” the sheriff’s office said.

In the video, a group of people can be seen gathered at the edge of the bridge, clinging to the deputy who had gone over the side. After some time, the group is able to hoist the deputy back onto the overpass.

“Thank you Lubbock citizens for watching over our deputies,” the sheriff’s office said.

“The deputies involved, and a civilian who sustained minor injuries, are all expected to recover. The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank everyone who worked to support the deputies until additional first responders arrived on scene,” the office said.

Officials said the crash is under investigation.

Lubbock is a roughly 300-mile drive northwest from Fort Worth.
