A woman accused of stabbing her 9-year-old son to death has been charged with capital murder, Texas authorities said.

Universal City police responded to a home in the early morning hours of Sept. 3 after the child’s father, a China Grove police officer, reported a disturbance, multiple news outlets including KENS 5 said.

Officerswere led to a 9-year-old boy, David Medina-Ehanire, who was suffering from stab wounds to the neck and abdomen, according to the San Antonio Express-News. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries, the publication reported.

Wilma Jamitza Medina, 50, the boy’s mother, is accused of committing the fatal act, police say.

“Crimes like this shock your conscience, rock you to your core,” Universal City Police Chief Johnny Siemens said during a news conference on Sept. 5.

“You can’t unsee some of the stuff that you see, and you can’t understand why it would happen,” he added..

The child’s father had arrived home shortly before the incident occurred and heard a commotion in the bedroom, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by KSAT.

“Police say once he got inside, he saw Medina holding the 9-year-old boy, who was not moving,” KSAT reported. “Medina was also stabbing herself, according to police, before her husband grabbed her and tried to get what was called a dagger-like object away from her.”

Medina was transported to a hospital and was treated, police said during the news conference. Police say she had no prior mental health issues.

Medina told investigators she believed she was being followed and that David was being hurt at school, San Antonio Express-News said.

“Moving forward, we hope we never see anything like this again. It was terrible,” Sgt. David Fawcett said at the news conference.

Medina has been booked into the Bexar County Jail with bond set at $600,000, court records show.

Universal City is about a 20-mile drive northeast from San Antonio.
