Parents found dead inside their home were discovered after their young children were outside looking for food, Texas authorities say.

Officers were called to the Houston apartment complex Aug. 18 when the three kids — ages 3, 2 and 1 — were in the parking lot asking people for food, Houston Police Lt. Larry Crowson said in a news briefing streamed by KHOU.

The kids told officers their parents were dead in their apartment, according to Crowson.Police entered their home and found the couple’s bodies.

It’s believed the father killed the children’s mother before killing himself, according to investigators.

The parents were dead for at least 24 hours before their discovery, police said. It’s unclear how they died.

Police have not identified the couple.

The children were uninjured and are being cared for, police said.

An investigation is ongoing, according to Crowson, who said there is no danger to the public.
