Accused carjacker accidentally arms victim — and he’s sent running, TX cops say
A man stole a woman’s car at a gas station, but she soon took it back with quick thinking and a knife, Texas authorities say.
The woman had just finished putting air in her tires at a gas station in Humble — a suburb north of Houston — when she noticed a stranger sitting in the driver’s seat of her car, Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said in an April 9 news release.
She told the man to get out, he told her no and stepped on the gas, Herman said. However, she too refused to take no for an answer, according to Herman, as she grabbed onto the driver’s side and wouldn’t let go.
The man, later identified as Shadrach Iyere, tried to make the woman fall off by repeatedly punching her in the face as he drove, Herman said.
Iyere crashed into a brick wall and the woman, still clinging to the door, made the man an offer: she would pay him to stop the car, according to Herman. She had money in her purse, she said, all he had to do was hand it to her. So he did.
Instead of giving him cash, she reached inside the purse and pulled out a knife, at which point Iyere got out of the car and ran off, Herman said.
However, deputies later found Iyere and arrested him on a charge of aggravated robbery, Herman said. His bond was set at $20,000.
Iyere had posted bail as of April 10, KTRK reported.
Prior to his arrest related to the recent carjacking, he was on deferred adjudication for a 2020 charge of stalking in San Marcos, the outlet reported.
