A Texas woman and her dog have been reunited after nearly two years thanks to good Samaritans with their own microchip scanner.

After Fourth of July fireworks caused Silver to bolt from her home in 2023, her owners exhausted “countless efforts” looking for her to no avail, according to a Feb. 21 Facebook post from Sisters’ Private Pet Parks & More on Facebook.

“Honestly, I had already given up hope,” owner Velma Gonzalez, of Edinburg, told KRGV.

There was no sign of Silver until Feb. 19, when Violeta Garcia decided she wanted brisket for dinner.

She found the dog wandering around the parking lot of Reyna’s BBQ & Cocina in Weslaco with no collar, Sisters’ Private Pet Parks & More. According to employees, she’d been there for about a week, about 20 miles from home.

Violeta and her sister Zoraida Garcia are no strangers to dog rescues. Under the banner of Sisters’ Private Pet Parks & More, they’ve found and returned multiple lost dogs to their owners.

According to a post from Zoraida, Violeta spent 45 minutes coaxing the scared dog into her car.

The sisters posted pictures of Silver to their page, and Zoraida broke out a microchip scanner she’d bought recently to see if Silver was chipped.

“We were not able to figure it out when we first made the post, but we kept trying and we found a microchip!” Zoraida Garcia said in the post.

KRGV reported that Petlink, the microchip company, called Gonzalez.

“She left me a message saying a good Samaritan had found Silver,” Gonzalez told the outlet. “I thought for a minute this was a scam… but then I [thought] how would they know her name was Silver?”

On Facebook, the sisters urged pet owners to chip their animals.

“The happiness in their voices was unmatched,” Garcia said. “They immediately took off to get their baby! So Silver got to spend the night at home, warm, after (so) long.”

Silver’s owner told KRGV that it “felt like she had never left.”

“She came in and then went straight to my bedroom, jumped on my bed, and got comfortable,” Gonzalez told the outlet.

Edinburg is near the U.S.-Mexico border and is about a 260-mile drive south from San Antonio.
