A search for scrap metal in Texas took a gruesome turn when the searcher discovered a cooler containing what appears to be a human skull, according to Houston police and local news reports.

The searcher made the grisly discovery around 5 p.m. Feb. 12 near Buffalo Bayou in Houston, according to a news release. He was searching for scrap metal, KPRC reported.

Homicide detectives and investigators from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences responded.

Officers were still investigating at about 7 p.m. that night, the department shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Police don’t know if the skull belongs to a child or adult, KHOU reported. There are no witnesses other than the person who found the cooler.

Police are waiting on an autopsy of the remains to determine gender, identity and cause of death.

An investigation is ongoing, police said. Anyone with additional information is asked to call 713-308-3600.
