K-9 shot 3 times is set to make full recovery — and Texas handler won’t leave his side
A young Belgian Malinois K-9 that was on the hunt for a murder suspect is on the mend in Texas after being shot multiple times.
The dog, named Rocky, was on the hunt for 56-year-old Robert Lee Davis, a suspect who was accused of shooting and killing Jesus Vargas, a Brazoria County Sheriff Deputy, when Vargas was attempting to serve Davis with an arrest warrant at a Houston shopping plaza on Jan. 15, the Associated Press reported.
When Rocky was able to sniff out the suspect hiding in a dumpster, the suspect shot the K-9 three times in the neck, the Harris County Constable Precinct 4 said in a Facebook post.
The precinct posted an update on Rocky on Jan. 16, saying he will be making a full recovery.
“Rocky is still at a Houston animal hospital receiving treatment, after being shot three times,” the precinct said. “Doctors think he should be able to be released in 48 hours. His handler has not left his side.”
Vargas was a veteran of the Brazoria County sheriff’s department, having served for 17 years, AP reported.
