A man accused of shooting an 8-year-old boy in the head in a road rage incident has now pleaded guilty, Texas court records show.

Frankie Haigood, originally charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following the June 2022 shooting in Amarillo, pleaded guilty Jan. 6 to an amended charge of deadly conduct with a deadly weapon, according to court records filed in Potter County.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, KVII reported.

Amarillo police had responded to a crash, and the boy’s father told officers his son had been shot in the head, according to KWTX. He said he chased after the other driver, later identified as Haigood, and forced him off the road.

Eric Frausto said the shooting of his son was a result of road rage, he told KVII. He said he honked at Haigood, whom he accused of running a red light and almost hitting his vehicle before Haigood fired shots at his car.

The father told KAMR that his son, Nicasio Frausto, survived his injuries, having only been grazed in the forehead.

“He’s a strong little boy. And he’s, he’s my hero,” Eric Frausto told the station. “It’s a blessing he’s still here. God is good, God is great.”

Haigood, 60, was treated for injuries he sustained in the crash and then taken into custody, according to the Amarillo Globe-News.

Amarillo, in the Texas Panhandle, is about a a 260-mile drive west from Oklahoma City.
