A 15-year-old high school student attempted to cross train tracks on his way to school, but he was struck and killed by a passing train, Texas police said.

Sergio Rodriguez, who was “dedicated to football,” died at the scene the morning of Dec. 9, Houston police and family members said.

Officials told KPRC 2 the 15-year-old was a sophomore at Milby High School.

“It is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community. This morning, one of our scholars tragically died after being struck by a train as they attempted to cross the train tracks. This loss is sure to raise emotions and concerns for our entire school, especially our students,” the Houston Independent School District said in an email to families.

Witnesses said the train was moving at a slower rate of speed, lights were flashing and the crossing gates were lowered when the teen went onto the tracks, Sgt. Bill Elsbury said in a news conference posted by KHOU.

Family said Rodriguez’s death was the “worst news ever,” his sister wrote in a GoFundMe.

His sister described Rodriguez as “kind, smart” and “funny,” saying he was “deeply” loved by his parents and four siblings, according to the GoFundMe.

“He was taken away from us too soon,” his sister wrote.

A memorial service for Rodriguez will be held Dec. 12, according to the school’s football team.
