Texas isn’t considered environmentally friendly, says study. Why the state isn’t green
Despite being among the greenest states in the country, some Texas cities don’t rank very well in terms of environmental friendliness.
A recent WalletHub study ranked Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso relatively low among the greenest cities in the US.
WalletHub evaluated the top 100 largest cities based on 28 important “green” metrics to determine which regions are the greenest in the nation. The dataset included information on water quality, green career prospects, and per capita greenhouse gas emissions.
Austin ranked No. 26, with a total score of 55.5 for environment, transportation, energy sources, and policies. San Antonio ranked No. 44 with a 50 overall score, and El Paso ranked No. 51.
How green is Fort Worth?
Fort Worth ranked even lower on the list at No. 76, with a 44.94 overall score. Houston ranked in the very bottom half at No. 98 with a 36.88 score overall.
“There are plenty of things that individuals can do to adopt a green lifestyle, from recycling to sharing rides to installing solar panels on their homes,” WalletHub Analyst Chip Lipo said. “ However, living in one of the greenest cities can make it even easier to care for the environment, due to sustainable laws and policies, access to locally-grown produce and infrastructure that allows residents to use vehicles less often.”
Environmental sustainability is one of the biggest challenges of our time, the experts said. They suggest cities determine how to attract renewable energy companies and other green businesses to help residents live a greener lifestyle.
