How expensive is it to keep the lights on? Texans are paying more than most, says study
The average monthly electricity bill for homeowners this summer was expected to be $173, slightly higher than the $168 average last year, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
However, energy consumption can vary depending on weather conditions, particularly in the South and Texas, where heat naturally affects everything.
A study by Green Improve found that Texas is 12th among 20 states with the highest monthly electric bills.
Green Improve’s energy specialists examined the most recent data on average monthly electricity use and average electricity pricing in each state to determine the cost of bills.
How much energy do Texans consume?
Texas households utilize 1,178 kilowatt-hours on average, according to the study. It revealed that Texans have spent $11.36 per kilowatt-hour since September, for an average monthly household bill of $133.82.
The study also found that the average cost of electricity per kilowatt-hour is 13.94 cents.
Hawaii was found to have the highest average monthly costs at $168.71 and the highest electricity prices, at 32.76 cents per kilowatt-hour, while having the lowest electricity consumption.
Electricity costs are lowest in Utah of the states that were reviewed.
