A 12-year-old girl walked into a police station after she spent the night sleeping on a bench, Texas police said.

Her mother had locked her out of their apartment all night, according to court records.

The mother, a part-time teacher at a Houston school district, was charged with child endangerment on Sept. 1, according to court documents.

The child was locked out after she got into a disagreement with her mother on Aug. 31, according to Houston police and court documents. She knocked on the door to get back inside, but she was not allowed in, police told McClatchy News.

McClatchy News is not naming the mother to protect the identity of the child. The mother’s attorney could not be reached for comment.

The mother was arrested and posted a $5,000 bond, according to court records.

She is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 15.
