A Texas man collapsed outside his home and died from gunshot wounds while his pregnant wife struggled to save his life, police and witnesses told news outlets.

Police said the man was fatally shot after midnight on Saturday, Aug. 10, outside his southeast Houston home, KTRK reported.

Osvaldo Casas, 37, had gone outside to confront unidentified suspects — who family and neighbors believe vandalized his car the previous night — and was shot, police told KRIV.

Casas tried to run back home but collapsed before he made it, and his wife performed CPR until first responders arrived, the outlet reported.

“I did it for maybe like 10 minutes until the police arrived, and they took over, but by that time I already knew he was gone,” Judith Molina, Casas’ wife, said, according to the outlet. “I knew he was gone.”

The night before, witnesses told police a black vehicle, possibly a truck, came through the neighborhood and pelted Casas’ vehicle with eggs and flour, KTRK reported. Neighbors said they saw the same vehicle and told Casas, which prompted him to go outside and confront the passengers, police said.

He was a father to two children, and soon-to-be three, family told the station.

“He came out by himself. After that, the family and the neighbors, everybody heard gunshots,” Lt. R. Willkens told KPRC. “He was at the very end of the street here at the intersection, walked up covered in blood, and collapsed. They did their best to give him medical attention, but unfortunately he did pass.”

Police have not said if they believe the alleged vandals are the same people responsible for killing Casas, but an investigation is underway, the outlet reported. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Houston police.
