A black Labrador retriever mix now named Tex spent 225 days at an Arizona shelter waiting for a new home.

Then a couple from Texas saw his photo on Facebook and made travel plans, the Humane Society of Yuma’s marketing specialist Phil Clark told McClatchy News by email June 26.

The pup was originally named Vex when he came into the shelter as a stray, Clark said.

His mother, Loma Clark, and a group of volunteers took a photos of the animals that had been at the shelter for 100 days or more, Phil Clark said.

Tex was among the photographed animals.

Loma Clark then shared the photos on her personal Facebook page, which is where Matt and Becky DePuy saw Tex.

The couple contacted the humane society and booked plane tickets to Phoenix. They drove about three hours southwest to Yuma, where they adopted Tex on June 24, Phil Clark said.

Then they drove 17 hours back to their home in Aubrey, Texas, with their new dog along for the ride.

“We are fortunate we have the means to travel and jobs that provide vacation we could use to offer him a safe place to live,” Becky DePuy said in an emailed statement.

“Our dear friend Loma Clark passionately advocates for the Humane Society of Yuma and we saw her shared post on Facebook about Tex being a long-term stay at the shelter and wanted to give him a good home,” she wrote.

“Happy ending for both of them,” Ron Ramirez commented on Facebook.

All adoptions at the Humane Society of Yuma are 25% off in June.
