A 14-year-old girl was going through a breakup when “secret admirer” notes started to appear in her cubby at the jiu-jitsu school she attended, Texas deputies said.

But the notes weren’t from a peer, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, and were instead from the San Antonio school’s 40-year-old instructor and owner.

This “grooming-type behavior” helped draw the teen to the instructor, deputies said. The two eventually became “involved,” according to Salazar, and the instructor sexually assaulted her several times between October 2023 and December 2023.

The 14-year-old recently told her family about the sexual assault, leading to the arrest of instructor Joseph Caballero the weekend of June 23, deputies said.

The instructor was charged with sexual assault of a child, according to Salazar.

Salazar said Caballero is out on bond and the school remains open.

Deputies believe there could be more victims.

San Antonio is located in Bexar County.
