12-year-old boy drowns in river while swimming with church group, Texas officials say

A 12-year-old boy vanished while swimming in a river with his church group, but search crews have found his body, Texas officials told news outlets.

He was part of a church group visiting Seguin, and went with several other children into the Guadalupe River at about 9:45 a.m. Monday, June 17, the Seguin Fire Department told KSAT.

Seguin is a roughly 35-mile drive northeast from San Antonio.

Firefighters responded to a call about a drowning near a rental property to the west of Seguin, WOAI reported. They learned five boys went swimming in the river but one went under and never came back up.

Officials deployed search crews, including divers, to find him, the station reported.

Several hours later, at 1:15 p.m., the boy was found dead and his body recovered, the Seguin Gazette reported. Officials added that he was not wearing a life jacket.

Officials did not publicly identify the boy.
