An unsuspecting Coloradoan traveled to Texas to buy a car — and brought an unexpected stowaway back with them, officials say.

The Colorado Springs resident was driving back on the interstate when “they noticed they were not alone,” Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region said in an Oct. 30 post on Facebook.

“Hiding in their new car was a lizard friend who decided to uproot his native life in Texas and hitch a ride to Colorado,” officials said in the post. “They didn’t want to leave him alone, but they also didn’t have anything to care for him properly. So, they agreed to be the anole’s Uber driver but edited his final destination to (the humane society) for help.”

A photo shows the bright green anole as it perched on a plastic water bottle.

A team at the humane society cared for the critter until it could be transferred to a species-specific rescue for specialized care, officials said.

“This cowboy is now living his best lizard life in Colorado!” officials said.

People shared their delight at the unexpectedly sweet story in the comments.

“Someone actually went out of their way to bring a lizard to the Humane Society?” someone said. “Now those are my kind of people!!”

Several people agreed with the sentiment.

“What a cutie, and I’m so glad he was brought in by such thoughtful people!” someone else said.

One person couldn’t help but joke: “They must have gotten Geico Auto Insurance.”
