An 11-year-old student was killed in the drop-off lane outside a Texas middle school after being struck by a vehicle, authorities said.

The San Marcos Police Department was called to Owen Goodnight Middle School at about 8:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, shortly before school began, according to a news release.

The student was pronounced dead at the school, police said.

The loss of a student is devastating and we are all grieving together,” San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Michael Cardona said in a letter to families. “I wish I had the right words to say, but I do not.”

In the letter, Cardona said the school resource officer and campus staff first responded to the incident and put the school on “an emergency hold to keep students and staff safe.” The incident was originally reported as a medical emergency in the school’s parking lot.

The district called police to investigate.

Officers said the driver of the involved vehicle was identified, and authorities do not expect any charges to be filed. The child wasn’t identified in the letter or the news release.

Goodnight Middle School classes were canceled for the day, and students were taken to San Marcos High School where families could pick up their children.

“We appreciate your continued prayers and support for the family and the San Marcos CISD community impacted by this tragic incident,” Cardona wrote in the letter. “All secondary counselors are on site to assist students and staff during this difficult time.”

Goodnight Middle School is in San Marcos, about 50 miles northeast of downtown San Antonio.
