Twenty-six Texas universities made Forbes’ 14th annual list of America’s Top Colleges, featuring 500 schools to “showcase the finest in American education.”

The ranking, Forbes wrote, spotlights schools that offer an excellent education at a great price, graduate high-earners and propel students to become successful entrepreneurs and influential leaders in their fields.

Rice University made the top 25 list, while the University of Texas landed in the top 50. Two others, Texas A&M and Southern Methodist University, ranked among the top 100.

No. 12: Rice University

Students at the private university receive an average of $47,887 in grant aid and graduate with $8,329 in loan debt. Ten years after graduation, graduates earn a median of $148,100.

“Rice is a private research institution in Houston’s Museum District that prides itself on a 6:1 student-faculty ratio, providing a close-knit undergraduate education,” Forbes wrote. “The university offers 74 undergraduate programs across seven schools. There are also more than 45 research centers, institutes and consortia, where over half of students participate in research.”

No. 43: University of Texas

The public university students receive an average of $11,121 in grant aid and graduate with $5,777 in loan debt. Graduates earn a median of $127,300 ten years after graduation.

“Located in Texas’s vibrant capital, the University of Texas, Austin, is a large research institution and the flagship of Texas’s public university system,” Forbes wrote. “The university offers more than 170 majors across 13 schools, but UT-Austin is best known academically for its business and engineering programs.”

No. 52: Texas A&M University

Students at the public university receive an average of $11,194 in grant aid and graduate with $8,182 in loan debt. Ten years after graduation, graduates earn a median of $129,900.

“The oldest public university in Texas, Texas A&M is a large research institution with a flagship campus in College Station, TX,” Forbes said. “Texas A&M offers its students more than 130 majors across 17 academic schools. The College of Engineering is the largest school on campus and houses top programs in petroleum engineering and nuclear engineering, true to A&M’s Texas energy roots.”

No. 83: Southern Methodist University

The private university students receive an average of $34,890 in grant aid and graduate with $11,378 in loan debt. Graduates earn a median of $131,600 ten years after graduation.

“Southern Methodist University is a large, private university in the Dallas suburb of University Park that is affiliated with the United Methodist Church,” Forbes said. “More than 100 majors and 85 minors are available to SMU undergraduates.”
