An Amber Alert out of Spring, Texas has been canceled after 3-month-old Mansa Igbokwe was found safe. His father, who had kidnapped the baby, fatally shot himself during a police chase, authorities said.

Police have found a 3-month-old Texas boy who was believed to be in imminent danger after his father shot his mother and grandmother and kidnapped the baby Wednesday night. An Amber Alert for the missing child was canceled early Thursday morning.

Mansa Igbokwe was abducted by his father, Obinna Igbokwe, around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday and the two were believed to have been in a white 2008 Honda Accord, according to the Amber Alert.

The Amber Alert was discontinued around 1:50 a.m. Thursday.

Obinna Igobokwe is suspected of shooting the child’s mother and grandmother before taking the child, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said.

Both women were shot in the head after an argument about custody of the boy.

Obinna Igobokwe’s wife, Tangela Igobokwe, was taken to a local hospital, where she was last listed in critical condition. The child’s grandmother, who was also Obinna Igobokwe’s mother-in-law, Linda Larkins, died from her injuries at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

The Corsicana Police Department said that Obinna Igbokwe dropped the 3-month-old baby, in his car seat, off at a local hotel, claiming he would return.

The hotel called the police, around midnight, after Igobokwe didn’t come back. Local law enforcement soon learned Igbokwe was connected to the child abduction and sent out alerts to neighboring North Texas counties, including Ellis and Navarro, that the 41-year-old man was in the area.

Around 1:05 a.m., the vehicle Igobokwe was driving was spotted. While officers tried to stop the car, Igbokwe tried to flee, engaging police in a “short pursuit,” before stopping in a nearby parking lot, police said.

Responding officers said they “observed and heard a single gunshot come from the interior of the Honda.”

“Law enforcement officers began life-saving measures and summoned medical personnel, but due to the severity of the injury Igbokwe succumbed to his wounds at a Dallas Hospital at about 5:20 a.m.,” the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said.

The 3-month-old child was reported safe and has since been reunited with his family.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Spring is near Houston, about 200 miles south of Dallas. The child and father were found near Corsicana, more than 160 miles from home.
