Evacuations underway as swift wildfire burns in Hood, Erath counties in North Texas
Separate wildfires swept through grass in three North Texas counties on Sunday, and authorities ordered people in the fires’ path to evacuate.
About 15 miles northeast of Stephenville, fire was burning over about 6,000 acres and was 5% contained about 8:30 p.m., according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. Stephenville is in Erath County and is about 65 miles west of Fort Worth.
“Aviation and ground resources are making progress on slowing the fire progress and containment line construction,” a forest service representative wrote about 6 p.m.
The fire erupted about 1:30 p.m.
People north of Star Hollow Road to the city of Lipan were ordered to evacuate to the east or west, according to the Hood County Sheriff’s Office.
About 8:30 p.m., the fire was south of Lipan at Farm Road 1189 and Boswell Court.
A firefighter suffered superficial burns to the face and was in good condition, the sheriff’s office said.
There are four emergency shelters in Granbury. They are at First Christian Church at 2109 West Highway 377; First United Methodist Church at 301 Loop 567; YMCA at 1475 James Road; and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 1226 Ross Lane.
Another wildfire was burning in Montague County, according to the National Weather Service. The fire was along and just east of Lake Nocona.
