16-year-old dies in fishing accident after his uncle tries saving him, Texas cops say
A 16-year-old boy died on Monday, March 7, after he fell into a creek while fishing, Texas officials say.
Around 2 p.m. Monday, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said authorities were searching for a male who fell into a waterway fishing near Cypresswood Drive. The area is close to the Cypresswood Golf Club, just north of Houston.
The teenager had been fishing with his uncles, and they were attempting to cross the creek that was 8 to 13 feet deep, KPRC reported. The 16-year-old fell under, and one uncle tried but couldn’t pull him out, according to KPRC.
Investigators believe they saw the teenager’s final footprints on the shoreline, according to KTRK. He slipped when he was trying to cross the steep riverbank, KIAH reported.
The search was concentrated along the bank of the stream, and officials found the boy’s body at around 7 p.m., KHOU reported.
“I would say where we located him was about 12 feet from the bank, and he was in about eight feet of water,” a Harris County Sheriff’s spokesperson told KTRK.
The teenager was identified by KTRK and KIAH as Edwin Mejia, a Honduran native who was married.
