Two students die in fiery crash as cars collide outside school, Texas officials say
Two students were killed over the weekend when they crashed their vehicles into each other outside their high school, according to the Texas district.
The crash occurred Saturday afternoon, Jan. 8, outside the entrance of Johnson High School in northeastern San Antonio, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
Vehicles being driven by two students from the school collided, and they were trapped inside as the vehicles burst into flames, according to KTSA. The students were pronounced dead at the scene, KTSA reported.
It’s unclear what led to the crash. The San Antonio Express-News said the victims were 16- and 17-year-old male students.
The students have not been publicly named, but Johnson High School principal Gary Comalander shared the news in a letter to parents on Sunday, Jan. 9.
“I have some sad news to share,” Comalander said in the letter obtained by McClatchy News. “Yesterday there was a terrible accident that occurred on Bulverde Road at the Johnson HS entrance. This accident involved two fatalities involving our Johnson students.”
A vigil was held Sunday at the crash site, where students, parents and school staff gathered to pay their respects, KSAT reported.
“They were good kids. Very good kids,” Lily Arranada, a parent at the school, told WOAI.
