Coronavirus not found in test results of sick college students from Baylor, Texas A&M

Both suspected coronavirus cases in Texas have turned out to be false alarms.

Baylor University announced Monday that test results for one of its students have come back negative.

“This is very good news, and we are deeply grateful to our local and University health care providers and officials and the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District for their approach to this case, their proactive guidance and expertise and the compassionate care extended to our student while we awaited the CDC results,” Sharon W. Stern, Baylor University Health Services medical director, said in a statement.

Separately, tests performed on a Texas A&M student who fell ill last week have also come back negative.

The respiratory illness reportedly was transmitted from animals to people last month at a market in Wuhan, China. Since then, cases have been reported in Japan, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea and Vietnam. The virus has killed at least 26 people in China and infected hundreds more worldwide. At least two confirmed cases have been reported in the United States, in Chicago and near Seattle.

Baylor is urging any student, faculty or staff member who has traveled to Wuhan, China, after Dec. 1 and now is experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath and sore throat seek medical attention immediately. Patients are asked to call their doctor or an emergency room ahead of time, so that an isolated room can be prepared.
