Driver late for a flight goes 100 mph and kills two people in a crash, Texas cops say
A 21-year-old man speeding to catch a flight killed two people in a crash, media outlets report.
Joseph Vincent Diaz, 21, is accused of driving 100 mph and weaving through traffic before hitting a vehicle attempting to cross Highway 71 in Austin, Texas, KXAN reported.
The two people in the vehicle died at the scene, according to Austin-Travis County EMS. Diaz was flown to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.
Police identified the deceased as 49-year-old Jose Velazquez and 45-year-old Joanne Menchaca, KTBC reported. Both were residents of Austin, the TV station reported.
A driver first reported Diaz driving recklessly in an Audi about 20 minutes earlier in a neighboring county, according to KEYE. Investigators calculated Diaz must have been driving 100 mph to 120 mph to cover enough distance to reach the crash site in that time, the Austin TV station reported.
Texas Department of Public Safety officials said Velazquez was at a stop sign before the crash when he “failed to yield” while attempting to cross the highway to a salvage yard, KTBC reported.
When interviewed at the hospital, Diaz told police he was unfamiliar with the vehicle because it was a rental car and was late for a flight out of Austin, KEYE reported.
Diaz also told medical staff at the hospital he was driving 100 mph, KXAN reported.
He is charged with two counts of manslaughter, KXAN reported.
