Infant crawls into grocery bag and suffocates as family sleeps, Texas sheriff says
An infant died just after midnight Tuesday morning in Harris County after crawling into a plastic bag and suffocating, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a news conference posted by KHOU on Twitter.
Gonzalez said deputies responded to an address in the 14800 block of Shottery Drive to investigate the death of a 3-month-old who was in the care of her grandmother while her daughter worked a night shift at a local restaurant in the area.
The grandmother told deputies she left the child in the living room and she later went to sleep around midnight, as noted by KHOU11. Gonzalez said one of the other children inside of the home moved the infant to a mattress on the floor.
“At some point, it appears the child may have moved some, landed on the floor somehow, found itself inside of a shopping bag and the assumption right now is that the child possibly suffocated,” Gonzalez said.
“The mother’s very distraught,” he said, according to KHOU11. “We saw her coming from work wearing a red Christmas hat, home to receive this kind of news.”
“Sad way to start Christmas Eve,” Gonzales said in a tweet.
