‘We might have to break your leg.’ Watch Texas cops rescue driver in fiery car crash

A driver in Texas fell asleep at the wheel and slammed into a tree, causing his car to burst into flames, police say.

A police officer on his way home saw the fire and jumped into action.

The 20-year-old Houston man crashed into the tree about 6 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, according to Harris County Constable Precinct 5.

A sergeant in the department spotted a wrecker driver trying to free the trapped man and stopped to help, police said. He called for backup as the flames spread closer to the driver.

Video shows police officers dousing the flames with fire extinguishers while others pulled at the man, whose foot was pinned under the dashboard. They struggled to free him as the fire spread inside the vehicle.

“We might have to break your leg, bro,” a deputy said. “I’m sorry.”

“No, no,” the driver said.

Finally, the deputies cut the driver’s pants and pulled him to safety “just before the passenger compartment became fully engulfed,” police said.

The driver had broken bones and underwent surgery. Deputies were unharmed with only “singed hair” and minor burns, police said.

“You are serving a purpose on this land, dude,” a deputy told the driver. “God was with you tonight. You understand that?”
