He stomped girlfriend’s cat to death during breakup, Texas officials say. Jail awaits

A Houston man who stomped his girlfriend’s cat to death during a breakup will be going to prison for years, prosecutors say.

Javontae Isaiah Thrasher, 22, grabbed the orange tabby from his ex-girlfriend’s arms as she was trying to leave their apartment in January, according to a Harris County District Attorney news release.

Then he knocked the cat to the ground, kicked the animal “like a soccer ball” and stomped on it six or seven times, a witness from across the street told investigators. Thrasher put the cat’s body in a dumpster.

The witness called police, who questioned Thrasher. He told investigators that he was arguing with his girlfriend and became angry enough that he killed her cat, prosecutors say.

“The girlfriend was actually packing his stuff and was moving him out of the apartment and he went into a rage over the breakup,” Harris County assistant district attorney Jessica Milligan told KRIV.

Thrasher pleaded guilty to felony animal cruelty in September, the Houston Chronicle reported.

On Tuesday, a judge sentenced him to six years in prison. Thrasher’s defense attorneys argued he should get probation, according to the news release.

However, Thrasher could’ve been sentenced to prison for up to 20 years because of a previous conviction of assault against his great-grandmother, prosecutors say.

“Hurting an innocent pet like this is a horrific and violent act that is almost unspeakable,” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said. “This man viciously attacked a helpless cat and has a history that includes pushing his own great-grandmother down.”
